Chapter 2: Organizational Culture

By Alison Rankin Frost

The case for the importance of culture is no longer a subject for debate. The most successful leaders put culture front and center of their organizations and they realize that “good” culture leads to success and “bad” culture leads to failure — sometimes catastrophic failure. Organizations with the best cultures attract the best talent, make the best decisions and do better than their competitors. Organizations with problems find that their culture is usually at the root of the troubles. Our focus nowadays is on what makes a “good” culture? Which are the key factors that a business or organization should have in their cultural framework?

Since culture first became important to organizations, we have looked at culture as various dimensions: national, organizational, professional, pan-national and regional, and the industry or sector culture.

Today we need to look at culture in a more sophisticated way. There are attributes that should be in every organizational culture. Themes that apply to every dimension of culture. Attributes that every organization will want to aspire to because they will enable everyone to pull together to achieve success.

This chapter pulls together the framework for an effective organization culture. In various guises, it is being promoted by industry bodies and practiced by many organizations.

IABC Staff, Featuring Alison Rankin Frost

Alison Rankin Frost’s insights into corporate culture are drawn from her long experience of executive and non-executive service in the private, public and voluntary sectors. She has worked in organizations with a global reach as well as those with a local focus in her hometown of London (U.K.). She founded the strategic communications consultancy, Context Consulting, in 1996 as one of the first dedicated brand and reputation risk consultancies. This chapter builds on research she published in 1999 on “Negotiating Culture in a Global Environment” (Journal of Communication Management), which remains cited in academic literature. She continues to learn as she advises leaders on integrating purpose, culture, diversity of thought, strategic communication and brand into their business strategies for the benefit of their organization’s corporate character.
