New Members Show IABC’s Future
by: Paige Schafer

This is the third installment of a series of monthly thought leadership pieces entitled “IABC Research & Insights.” These pieces present a unique perspective, based on proprietary IABC data and the views of the authors. We hope this article, and the ones that follow, spark discussions at the chapter, regional and international level.

During its most recent Member Month, which celebrates all of the benefits, colleagues and opportunities that exist within the association, IABC attracted more than 330 new members. These professionals have backgrounds and skills that will help shape the priorities of the organization in the coming months and years.

These members are part of a larger group who join IABC throughout the year. To develop a better understanding of the changing membership, we examined the descriptive data (voluntarily provided) from the 1,000 newest IABC members. Please note that the percentages below are derived only from those who submitted a response in a specific category, not from all 1,000 members.

Recent Members Control Substantial Budget

While IABC continues to draw professionals at every level of experience and responsibility, more than 26% of new members control a budget of at least $1,000,000, and an additional 18% of new members have budgets from $100,000–$1,000,000.

Diversity of Industries Represented by New Members

New members came from 24 different industries, from agriculture to utilities. The largest pool, by a significant margin, identified as belonging to consulting/professional services, with education and training; health care; finance and insurance; government and military; and technology closely grouped together.

New Members Identify With 2 of the Career Milestones

More than 60% of respondents identified with the generalist/specialist and strategic advisor milestones of the IABC Career Assessment, split evenly between the two levels. New members identified least with the foundational milestone, providing an opportunity for IABC to continue strengthening its outreach to students and younger professionals.

Canada and U.S. Regions Added the Most New Members

The three regions that added the most new members were Canada West (217 members), Canada East (214 members) and the U.S. Southern Region (207 members).

Continue supporting IABC’s vast and skilled membership by inviting colleagues to belong to our global community.
