Corporate culture: #CommChat recap

How do you define corporate culture? And how do you not only communicate it to employees, but involve them in helping create it? In last week's #CommChat,  @JillVitiello, IABC international executive board director, as the guest host for a discussion on why corporate culture is important and how to communicate it. It's not too late to jump in on the conversation, or share with us what you'd like us to cover in future discussions. Tweet us with the #CommChat hashtag to join in. For a complete recap, check out Twitter Moments. Join in: #CommChat discussions are every third Wednesday of the month on Twitter.

What does corporate culture mean to you?

A1. It's combination of the culture employees bring with them and the beliefs, values and traits that the company attempts to impart to its employees. https://t.co/1UYnIxp1aF #commchat

A1 Corporate culture for us is all about the people! Yes it has to tie in with our values and mission but the amazing, passionate people we have on in our team enable the culture to shine through #commchat --- Bananatag (@bananatag) February 20, 2019

To me, corporate culture is the way in which a company approaches its business and how people interact with each, internally and externally. #commchat

Why is communicating corporate culture important to an organization?

A2: If your employees are acting, saying or believing one thing, and it is communicated outside the organization differently, it creates a huge integrity problem. This is a key reason why it is important we communicate about it effectively. #CommChat

A2: Communicating corporate culture to an organization can ensure consistency throughout#commchat https://t.co/ClSdNZgqV6 --- Courtney Adams (@courtkneeadams) February 20, 2019

A2: Corporate culture is the foundation of success or failure. Helping employees understand that is imperative. Look at sick cultures like Enron. Effective culture communication could have embolden people to speak up and stop plead practices. #CommChat. https://t.co/MP7N9k15pZ

@JillVitiello@IABC A2. Communicating your corporate culture helps your internal and external audiences understand your core values. #CommChathttps://t.co/KCK2LtY271 ---- Melody Dickson (@MelodyMercy97) February 20, 2019

In what ways do you communicate your organization's culture to employees?

tbh, I think we need to move beyond communicating, but we must demonstrate. Tell stories that are actionable demonstrations of the culture. #commchat --- Jonathan Phillips (@DigitalJonathan) February 20, 2019

A3.

You have to go beyond communicating your organization's culture, in our opinion. You have to live it. Your culture. Your values. Your purpose. Your vision. Your goals. Should be shared and embraced. They should drive/share your efforts. #commchat ??? Bentley University (@bentleyu) February 20, 2019
It shows up in everything. A campaign isn???t enough. If you???re expecting different behaviors, reinforce them with your measures for performance and criteria for promotion. ??? Lisa Ramsey (@RamseyLisa) February 20, 2019

How can employees contribute to building corporate culture and articulating the corporate narrative?

A4: I believe trust, from the bottom upwards, is pretty crucial. As others have said, no amount of bombarding of corporate messaging will change a culture. Actions speak louder than words. Win over the team and everyone wins #commchat --- Bruno Piscatelli (@BrunoPiscatelli) February 20, 2019

Productive teamwork and creating positive collaborative experiences to achieve shared results. #commchat

??? Sharon Hunter (@SharonHunter) February 20, 2019
A4: Employees can share interesting company content and news on their personal social media channels #CommChat@JillVitiello ??? Danielle Bullen Love (@daniellewriter) February 20, 2019

What are the best practices you've found to communicate your corporate culture to prospective employees?

I cannot stress enough the importance of involving employees throughout the entire process. That's where so many good ideas go wrong, when employees aren't involved. #CommChat https://t.co/8l8wvj6imc ??? L. Darcel (@BelleUnplugged) February 20, 2019

Developing a team to execute employee branding is key to successfully communicating any corporate culture. The first experience candidates have will be at an event, online or just browsing. The company cultural brand lives in that interaction. #CommChat

??? Mike Champagne (@Mike_Champagne) February 20, 2019
@ramseyLisa: I am so pleased you are using "real employees." The most powerful testament about an organization comes from those who rely on it for their livelihoods (and sometimes reciprocate it, too). That's high integrity, believable, trust worthy! #CommChat ??? Craig Fleisher (@craigfleisher) February 20, 2019
